The Issue:
Has your SAMSUNG Galaxy S2 smart phone started beeping at you?
A few weeks ago my phone developed an interesting issue. Periodically the phone would chirp twice and show me the error "Charging Paused. Voltage too high". This was very odd to me because the phone was not plugged in.
Investigation:
If you look at your battery icon (top right of the phone screen) you should notice the lightning bolt in the icon - indicating the phone is charging - even though you do not have it plugged into the USB charger. This occurs only when the battery in below 100%. If you look at the battery statistics of your phone when the battery is 100% you get an interesting health status of: Over Voltage.
I did a little digging around in forums and such and it seems that this issue is caused by a faulty USB board in the phone. This is a cheap fix, from $6 and up you can find a new USB board for you i9100 model phone on ebay.
Now, in comparison, the new PCB I got is a little different. It is actually Rev 0.3 and the original is REV 2.2. But I went ahead and replaced it anyhow.
What You May Need:
Your Phone (i9100 model), a #0 Phillips, something flat and ridged for prying ( I used a razor, but this wasn't that great)
Here is what you need to do (or what I did anyway):
STEP 1:
Remove the back panel and batter from your phone.
At this point, take some time to get acquainted with this job. Compare the new board with the old and picture what you might have to do to complete this job.
STEP 2:
Remove the 7 small screws from the back panel. Pry the case apart with something flat but ridged. I used a razor blade, but I don't recommend you do because the razor was too flexible.
Step 3:
Remove the 2 screws holding the USB board in place.
Step 4:
Disconnect the small ribbon connector from the main board (very carefully). I just gently pried this upward.
Step 5:
Disconnect the small coax cable on the left hand side of the board. Again, I just gently pried up on it.
Step 6:
Gently pull up the old USB board. It is held in place with a bit of sticky tape. Also, to remove the ribbon cable to the left you must pry up a little on the main board to slide the cable down and out. Be careful.
Step 7:
Install the new board and fasten it down with the two previously removed screws. Remember the new board has sticky tape installed and you must remove the little white tabs before you have the PCB in place. Reconnect the coax and the ribbon cable.
Step 8: Snap the case back together and re-install the 7 previously removed screws. Replace the battery and the back cover. Power it up!
Results:
After the phone rebooted, I was happy to find the phone did not indicate it was charging. Battery status was happy.
After plugging in the USB cable the battery charged just fine.
Most important it has been a few days now and no more beeping or error message pop ups. I consider this fixed!
